Dear ANZCA board and Annual Scientific Meeting Committee,

As health workers, we have watched in horror as the Israeli Occupation Forces have targeted, bombed and destroyed hospitals, health centres, universities, and humanitarian aid agencies as part of their ongoing invasion of Gaza. Between 180 and 450 health workers have been killed by Israeli forces since October 2023 (as of April 2024), and the Israeli government has engaged in a sustained blockade of medical supplies to Gaza.

We have heard countless reports from health workers in Gaza describing the horrific landscape in which they are attempting to work. We know that many civilians, including women and children, have had to undergo surgical procedures - from caesarean sections to amputations - without anaesthesia, as a result of Israel’s medical blockade. Many of us have seen firsthand the harrowing footage of health workers attempting to care for patients under these conditions. It is long past time for medical colleges across the world to address the devastating health effects of Israel’s war crimes in Gaza and show solidarity with their colleagues who are risking their lives to save others in unimaginable conditions.

It is in this context that I write to express my grave concerns regarding the upcoming 2024 ANZCA Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). It has been brought to my attention that you have invited Professor Carolyn Weiniger to be a keynote speaker at the event. Professor Weiniger’s views in support of Israel’s attacks on Gaza have been openly shared on social media. These statements have included Professor Weiniger justifying Israel’s bombing of Gaza’s hospitals, suggesting that the provision of humanitarian aid for civilians should be conditional, and denying the fact that there is a lack of anaesthesia available in Gaza.

Given that the ongoing invasion in Gaza is creating an acute and urgent health crisis, we are troubled by your decision to invite a keynote speaker who denies the gravity of this medical emergency. As health workers, we commit ourselves to providing professional and compassionate health care to all those who need it. I am concerned that the choice to invite Professor Weiniger as a keynote speaker at this time goes against these commitments. As the peak medical college for anaesthetists, I urge you to reconsider the decision to have Professor Weiniger as a keynote speaker at your meeting.

I therefore ask that you consider removing Professor Weiniger as a speaker at the meeting. We also ask that the college take an explicit stand in recognising the genocide in Gaza, and condemning the systematic targeting and dismantling of the healthcare system in Gaza. There is considerable evidence, including materials provided in the case before the International Court of Justice, that makes clear that the Israeli Occupation Forces are deliberately targeting, killing, and even torturing medical professionals in Gaza. It is incumbent upon all of us, including medical colleges and associations, to stand against genocide. We cannot allow this violence to become normalised.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue and I look forward to your response by 14 April 2024, noting the upcoming date of the ASM. If the college continues to endorse Professor Weiniger’s views by including her as a speaker at the conference, I will, unfortunately, have to move to call for a boycott of the college and conference, as well as make the media aware of the college's position.
